Sažetak
This book chapter acquaints the reader with the topic of language contact in diaspora communities in a general sense, and to specific features that are important to the structure of the edited volume as a whole. The first part of the introduction provides an overview of Croatian in language contact settings. It draws on both diachronically and synchronically focused studies, and looks also at contact situations in both the homeland and in transposed settings. Numerical data on the Croatian(-speaking) diaspora is also provided. The multi-site nature of the edited volume is then outlined and accompanied by reference to other, multi-site studies of heritage languages. The chapter concludes with the aims and theoretical framework employed in the volume followed by a short run-down of all of the volume's 15 chapters.
