Dirofilaria repens Microfilaremia Human Host
Sažetak
In the letter to the Editor we discussed on some aspects of the biology and maturation of Dirofilaria repens in human hosts and real number of cases with microfilariamia. Recently several authors published papers on D. repens microfilariemia in humans suggesting that humans themselves can act as final hosts but it still has remained an open question. To answer the question we suggested development of standardize diagnostics procedures. Including morphological identification of D. repens (gender, maturation), histology/histopathology of D. repens (presence of microfilariae), molecular confirmation of D. repens with sequencing, Knott's test of larger blood volumes (5 ml) and molecular detection of D. repens microfilarie and Wolbachia spp.In the most European countries lack mandatory reporting of D. repens in dogs creates a situation for undisturbed D. repens exposure to humans, development of mature male and female worms and microfilariae. There is no doubt that human dirofilariosis is expanding, thus adopting a One Health approach is sine qua non to control this emerging zoonotic disease.
