Sažetak
In the first years of its existence, the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia was a country with a strongly soviet oriented system. Until the Cominform split in 1948. and the expulsion of Yugoslavia from this international organisation, Marshal Tito, along with his close colleagues was, in the eyes of the western world, one of Stalin's finest representatives and pupils in Europe. All of this has changed in 1948. when the split between the Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union became public. Suddenly, Yugoslav leadership got branded revisionists by the socialist camp and therefore had to devise a „seperate road to communism“. This was a decisive event in Yugoslav history, a moment which determined Yugoslavian politics for the next forty years and influenced even the Cold war as a global phenomenon. Much has been written about the Yugoslav experience and history in this, conditionally speaking, Stalinist period. But, unlike most of the previously done historiographic investigations of this period in Yugoslav history, this paper will deal with an issue that is usually in the domain of disciplines such as sociology of literature, and that is therefore partly neglected in historiography. This issue is the question of what kind of Marxist literature, taken in the broad sense, did the people, especially the youth, read in this period. The importance of studying what was being read comes from the idea that reading literature functions as an experience that models what sociologist Erving Goffman calls intellectual frames. These frames are a pool of past experience that determines ones understanding of all future events that this individual interacts with. On the other hand, studying what was being read reveals what were official cultural politics of the country and the Communist party. In this paper, combining historiographical literature and archival sources, I analyse cultural politics of the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia as well as what was being printed and read in the first years of the country. The most important sources being used are simple brochures printed in large numbers during the war or immediately after it and questionnaires filled out by the members of League of Communist Youth of Yugoslavia. Among other things, in these questionnaires young communist had to write what Marxist literature books and brochures did they read. Combining qualitative and quantitative data, I analyse what was the preferred ideology of the early post war Yugoslavia.
