Sažetak
Resistance measurements calculated from Elmendorf tests provide valuable insight into durability and lifespan characteristics of observed material. However, Elmendorf method is suitable for testing tear resistance of paper and paperboard but not corrugated board. The aim of this paper is to determine is it possible to correlate tearing data of perforated corrugated board with another mechanical property of perforated corrugated board such as tensile strength. Four E flute types of corrugated board were tested, cut under five defined angles (depending on Machine Direction) with five types of perforation placed in the center of the long edge of the sample. Instron tensile tester was used for testing tensile strength and Elmendorf tear tester was used for tearing and converting those measurements to tear strength units. Least squares means of tensile strength and tear resistance for three qualitative explanatory variables (quality of E flute corrugated board, type of perforation and angle of cut sample) were compared visually using plots. Correlation for quantitative variables, tensile strength and tear resistance, was performed following parametric or nonparametric tests depending on distribution of measured data due to three qualitative variables. Analysis showed statistically significant relationship between tensile strength and tear resistance of perforated corrugated board, mostly interpretive as high positive correlation.
