Sažetak
The reintroduction of the mandatory teaching of Italian as the language of the social environment in the Croatian schools of the Istrian statutory bilingual towns and municipalities represents a very actual topic of reflection and discussion in the contemporary Istrian sociolinguistic framework, taking into consideration the political agenda and the public discussions previously promoted by many exponents of the Italian National Community in Istria and lately by the Council of the Italian National Minority. Therefore, a quantitative sociolinguistic research was conducted, investigating the public opinions and attitudes of a substantial part of Istrian residents (N=3512 from the age of 13 to the age of 55) towards the issue of teaching the (minority) Italian language in the Croatian (majority) schools or, more precisely, the level of (un)fairness, desirability and usefulness of that practice.
