Sažetak
During the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the different national-religious groups targeted religious buildings, since such structures both represent the national presence of the Others and act as places of memory. Post-war, the religious communities are (re)building new and more monumental religious structures, as markers of space and place as theirs. Such competitive destruction of Others’ religioscapes, and subsequent construction of new ones by the victors can be observed in Bosnia and Herzegovina for centuries: e.g., the conversion of churches into mosques after the Ottoman conquest, the building of the Orthodox and Catholic cathedrals in Sarajevo in the late nineteenth century, and the placement and size of Catholic churches from 1878–1914 and Orthodox ones from 1920–1941. In this chapter we give a historical overview of these competing religioscapes and of the contemporary processes that are being used to religiously nationalize the landscape.
