Sažetak
The Leipzig Charter on Sustainable European Cities is a document that strongly supports the European Strategy of Sustainable Development. It takes equally into account all dimensions of the sustainable development - economic prosperity, social balance and a healthy environment. There is an important strategy, as a part of an integrated urban development that covers creation and ensurance of high-quality public spaces, a task that has to be done jointly by the state and by local authorities. Our research is concentrated on the local authorities in the city of Osijek in the period of the post-socialist transition and the way they cope with the challenge of the sustainable transformation of the city. At the same time, they (the local authorities) are aware of the importance of the functional and well-designed urban places in the life of the urban population. A special emphasis will be put on the reconstruction of the city center, on the complete reconstruction of the promenade along the river Drava and on the positive effects of new solutions on the quality of a public life.
