Sažetak
Reconstruction of cities implies the creation of spatial systems able to stimulate the processes of social interaction and integration. Important categories of spatial system are the open, public spaces of the city as the carriers of the quality of the urban environment. In that sense, we can rely on the inspiration in the heritage of the traditional city where, at the micro level of the open, public space, we single out urban niches as the physical and aesthetic framework of social events. The urban niches in front of the Capuchin Church, the cinema "Europe" and the business – residential building "RO-MA" enrich the public, open space of the centre of Osijek. These "small spatial bonuses", the places of special social interaction, were created by extending the public area of the street corridor or by giving away a part of the private area to public use. Urban niches, as an inspiration in the heritage, have not been used in recent interventions in Osijek “urban tissue”, which leaves the architecture often at the level of the aesthetic credibility, but unfortunately without social relevance.
