Sažetak
This paper presents data on the history of archaeological research of antique and late antique periods in the region of Hrvatsko zagorje. The various types of archaeological activities were undertaken mostly by the staff members of the present-day Archaeological museum in Zagreb, as well as their representatives in the local communities. Few sites were excavated using more or less correct archaeological methodology available at the time. The research consisted mainly of the collecting of accidental finds that emerged during agricultural field work and the gathering of data on those objects provided by the local people. Initially, there was no protective nor systematic research carried out, although there was constant awareness of experts about the need for it. A certain degree of field survey was carried out as early as the first half of the 20 th century, but it was only in the second half that this type of archaeological research became systematic. The site of Lobor – Our Lady of the Mountain remains the only antique site in Hrvatsko zagorje explored to a greater extent. The purpose of this paper is to deduce whether any conclusion on the life circumstances of the region in the antique period can be drawn despite the low level of archaeological research.
