Sažetak
The paper deals with the transformation of the County of Istria into a margraviate, a process that began during the reign of King Henry IV and whose key protagonist was a Wodalricus whose origins are still debated in historiography. Frist, the author demonstrates that authentic primary sources allow for only one interpretation of Ulrich’s ancestry. Second, the author reinterprets the “elevation” of Istria from a county to a march, arguing that the syntagm Marcha Histria stems primarily from Ulrich who was originally appointed as the margrave of Carniola. The study then delineates the causes and effects for this fusion of Istria and Carniola. Finally, an overview of the fates of Ulrich's four heirs corrects several enduring historiographical errors.
