Sažetak
Due to the histological and functional connection of the dentine and pulp, a damaged dentine surface represents a way in which external stimuli can have a harmful effect on the pulp. The harm caused by external stimuli depends on the size of the dentine injury, which is defined by the surface of the injured dentine, the thickness of the remaining dentine and the dentine quality (primary dentine, sclerotic dentine). It also depends on the type of stimuli, their frequency, intensity and duration as well as on the condition of the pulp. Pulp protection is a procedure of covering the dentine injury (indirect pulp capping) and/or dental pulp (direct pulp capping) with bioactive or other agents with the aim of isolating the dentine-pulp complex and eliminating external stimuli harmful for the pulp. Materials used for protecting the dental injury are cavity varnishes, cavity liners, dentine- enamel adhesive systems, cement bases, agents based on mineral trioxide aggregate, Biodentine. The aim of all of these agents is to prevent the transfer of external stimuli towards the pulp and preserve its vitality. The choice of material depends on the thickness of the remaining dentine, the dentine quality and the condition of the pulp as well as on the choice of the restorative material.
