Sažetak
Introduction: Stress is defined as an organism’s response to situations when a person encounters events, situations and individuals that he/she perceives as a threat. Professions like nursing are known to be burdened with an increased amount of stress, and the most common sources are work overload, a limited opportunity to experience career advancement, lack of adequate interpersonal relationships at work, poor work organisation, as well as conflicts with the patient and his/her family members. Constant exposure to such stressors results in the development of burnout syndrome, characterised by emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and lack of personal accomplishment, which in turn affects the quality of patient care and safety. The aim of this paper was to draw attention to burnout syndrome as one of the paramount problems of modern nursing by appraising the frequency of this issue and its intensity. Methods: The methodology included data collection through a quantitative survey with a convenient sample of 89 nursing students who were also employed as nurses. The Oldenburg Burnout Inventory was used as an instrument. The results were analysed with Microsoft Excel and SPSS Statistics. The research was conducted voluntarily and anonymously through the Merlin platform in March 2020. Results: The majority of respondents (43%) stated that they are satisfied with their current job ; however, 37% of them disclosed that they feel drained during work and 45% of respondents felt exhausted and tired even after work. Discussion: Given the vulnerability of health professionals to burnout at work, continuing education about burnout syndrome and systematic work on prevention are warranted. It is evident that education is a key component for nurses regardless of their years in service, position and other factors.
