Sažetak
Business results of the Croatian hospitality industry are not satisfactory and lag behind world averages. One of the underlying reason is the inadequate performance measurement, assessment and management. The last decade of the 20th century was characterized by the revision of the traditional systems and by the emergence of new performance management systems, with the main objective to help organizations to enhance competitiveness and profitability. A considerable degree of concern is, however, apparent, that , despite the progress taking place with regard to more effective performance measurement systems, hotel organizations are still focusing on more traditional forms of performance measurement, which are associated with a number of fundamental weaknesses (limitations in their accuracy and neutrality, dominance of lag/result over lead/determinant measures, lack of balance etc.). The main objective of this research is to reveal the differences and gaps between hotel managers&#8217 ; attitudes on what determines the success of their hotels and what they really measure. Based on their opinions, a general framework of performance measurement system is proposed and the results of the hotel companies measured upon it. The paper is hoped to encourage the rethinking of performance measurement systems in order to enable hotel organizations to more effectively meet the changing demands and the challenges of their competitive environment.
