Sažetak
The article deals with the relation of Croatian youth toward their own nation in the period of transition, the European integration and individual European nations. The analysis is based on the results of empirical research conducted in 1999. and 1986. on a representative sample of young people. The comparison of results has shown that the attachment of youth to their own nation has increased. In relation to the 1980s the attractiveness of cosmopolitan attitudes has decreased and nationally oriented attitudes decreased. It was demonstrated that most young people are pro-European oriented and critical to the social situation in Croatia, especially to the insufficient democratization of its political and social system. When it comes to the attitude toward individual nations in Europe, the young have shown a greater social distance toward the Eastern, non-catholic nations (especially the Serbs, the Bosniacs and the Albanians) than toward Western, catholic ones. The heterogeneous structure of the youth?s national consciousness reflects the influence of the value system of the dominant ideology in Croatia, which promoted the hierarchical principle of culture differentiation, but it also reflects the influence of the Western European context, which is not immune to nationalism and racism when it comes to South and East European nations.
