Hydrogen bonding
Sažetak
Hydrogen bonding is dominating directed noncovalent interaction govering the organisation of molecules in the crystalline state but also in the solution. It plays the significant role in supramolecular organisation based on directionality principle and the recognition of donor and acceptor functionalities ; such hydrogen bonded assemblies might reveal properties different to the basic building units. Hydrogen bonding can also affect the molecular conformation and thus determimine the overall molecular architecture influencing packing patterns. The new advanced experimental techniques that are more sensitive and can detect dynamics of molecules change our concepts on hydrogen bonding as well. A statical concept related to the definiton of symmetrical and asymmetrical hydrogen bonds treated as dynamical process of proton transfer, brings a new aspect of hydrogen bonding. These new theoretical approaches are equally important for understanding some of the properties of small molecules but also of macromolecules. Systematic analysis of hydrogen bonding patterns as a function of proton donor and acceptor properties, and the sterical parameters, including chirality, will be presented for a large number of amino acid derivatives prepared by Prof. M. Žinić and coworkers, Ruđer Bošković Institute, Zagreb. Particular attention will be given to a molecular topology of such hydrogen bonded assemblies in view of crystal engineering.
