Sažetak
An important factor of achieving sustainable development refers to sustainable consumption at which consumers, with their own activities, can contribute to reaching the goals of sustainable development. The principles of sustainability, when applied, can support the quality of life and enhance individual, community and global well- being. Starting from the contribution of sustainable behaviour to people’s subjective well- being, especially to the environmental protection as a pre-condition for healthy life, the current paper is aimed at determining the impact of sustainable consumption on life satisfaction using a sample of young people in Croatia. The measurement of sustainable consumption has been based on the phases of the consumption process, including the purchase, usage and disposal of products while performing the pro-environmental behaviour, as well as two items related to the social component, and it has been adjusted to the system of consumption in the researched population. Previous research has shown that different aspects of sustainable consumption generally have a positive impact on subjective well-being although this should not be always the case with the relationship between particular behaviours and well-being components. In this study, a positive relationship was determined between sustainable consumption and the cognitive component of subjective well-being, i.e., life satisfaction, only in several behaviours, that is, in purchasing local food, saving energy by turning electronic devices off when they are not in use, and recycling over-used 4 packages. All this indicates that young people are not enough included in sustainable consumption and reveals a slight importance of sustainable consumption on life satisfaction. The study results are based on a scale, which is both comprehensive, encompassing the main forms of behaviour, and general, without dealing with particular behaviours in detail, so it opens up possibilities for further research. On the other hand, the results suggest that avoiding meat consumption reduces life satisfaction, which can serve as a starting point for the research and education about nutrition regarding ecological, ethical and health issues and the effects of raising animals for feeding people. Taken entirely, this study points out the necessity of societal actions towards providing stronger education and media contents that promote sustainable consumption, as well as the efforts of any other stakeholder focused on sustainability.
