Sažetak
Revelations, divine agents and cosmic, transcendent imagery are prominent features of the compositional frame of Matthew's Gospel. Scholarship on apocalyptic literature has stressed that mediated revelation of transcendent reality is the essential feature of apocalypses, a feature that also functions as a claim to divine authority. Two related questions thus emerge for Matthew's narrative frame: (1) To what extent may the revelations and cosmic imagery therein be understood as apocalyptic discourse? (2) How does such discourse function rhetorically in relation to the Gospel as a whole? This study therefore identifies and categorizes apocalyptic discourse in Matthew's special material and redactions within its compositional frame. Apocalyptic discourse is found in Matthew's apocalypticization of biblical forms or specific texts, such as the periodization of the opening genealogy and Matthew's peculiar appropriation of the particle ιδου. Other passages are shown to conform to the SBL apocalypse paradigm, or to markedly appropriate apocalyptic symbolism. In addition, much of the apocalyptic discourse identified in the opening frame is found to correspond with that found in the closing frame, thereby accentuating its rhetorical effects. The conclusion of this study is that Matthew's extensive appropriation of apocalyptic discourse in his narrative frame justifies its designation as an 'apocalyptic frame' that functions both to establish the authority of Jesus and the written Gospel itself.
