Sažetak
This article discusses metaphor and metonymy as understood in contemporary linguistics, i.e., as processes that appear in language as well as in thinking about the world. Following their definition and a short historical overview, the main characteristics of metaphor and metonymy are described, namely source, target, and their connection and conventionality. The central part of the article focuses on functions of metaphor and metonymy in diachronic semantic change, polysemy, grammar, discourse and communication, psycholinguistics, foreign-language learning and teaching, multimodal studies, and gesture studies. The article concludes with a discussion of the relationship between metaphor and metonymy and recent trends in their study.
