Sažetak
The presence of pharmaceuticals in waters is an emerging environmental problem due to their potential impact on human health and the environment, even at low concentrations. Thus, the effluents from the municipal wastewater treatment plants, are identified as major sources of pharmaceuticals in aquatic environments and can be characterized as highly toxic require improved treatment. The technologies based on advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) may offer a viable solution in the terms of detoxification of the effluent. However, the potential adverse effects during the treatment can possibly be associated mainly with the formation of the degradation by- products and should be taken into consideration. In this study, photo-oxidative and photo-catalytic AOPs were applied for the degradation of polar and non-polar pharmaceuticals in water, oxytetracycline (OTC) and memantine (MEM), respectively. The obtained results were correlated with the biodegradability and toxicity to assess the environmental aspects of applied treatment processes. Acute toxicity bioassays were performed according to the standard procedures using freshwater planktonic crustacean Daphnia magna (ISO 6341:2012) and freshwater microalgae Selenastrum capricornutum (ISO 8692). For bioassay on D. magna a light table and BM were used. For conducting bioassay on S. capricornutum a spectrophotometer with long-cell holder for optical density measurements was used All experiments were carried out in a laboratory incubator. Among the both pharmaceuticals, OTC has shown higher toxicity for Selenastrum capricornutum than the MEM, while regarding Daphnia magna, both components have shown similar level of toxicity. Toxicity level of samples collected through the studied AOP-processes depends on the test organism chosen for the bioassay.
