Sažetak
Older people in various geographical areas show a preference for living as long as possible in their own home. Research confirms that the growth of the market value of homes in which they live, the growth of the individual's material status, stable and stronger financial sources and stronger ties with the community (stronger neighborhood ties) in which the individual lives are positively related to what science describes as "aging in place". Homeowners associate their homes with a sense of security, family, and heritage. On the other hand, the weakening of the health and functional status of an individual as well as changes in the structure and size of the family negatively affect the possibilities of aging in one's own home. When it comes to aging on the island, some of these positive features are particularly emphasized: living in your own home and within neighborhood that provide satisfaction, experiencing the island as a home to which they belong, connection and closeness of community members, helping each other, feeling secure on many levels… Other positive characteristics of a good quality of life from the perspective of older people: the possibility of access to local institutions (services) and good public transportation on many small and sparsely populated islands are often lacking in the volume expected for quality everyday life. However, what happens when an area of an island inhabited by a large number of elderly people experiences a “lockdown” due to a pandemic? Geographical isolation, together with good public health measures, has proven to be an advantage for many islands, although it does not fully ensure or explain the eventual success in preventing or spreading of the disease. Research has confirmed that island communities have shown resilience, adaptability, and innovation in coping with the COVID-19 pandemic. Precisely the advantages provided by island communities - closeness and connection, in some cases proved to be a danger to health (the case of Brač), especially if they are observed with regard to the age structure of the population and the characteristics of the diseases that were (until the invention of the vaccine) the greatest threat to the elderly.
