Sažetak
This paper examines the attitudes on care for the natural environment through a cross-national comparison of Central European countries based on European Social Survey (ESS) data from Round 4 (2008) and Round 9 (2018). In the theoretical part of the paper, we discuss Schwartz’s ‘Human Values Scale’ and the way in which it has been adapted for ESS to include 21 items corresponding to 10 basic human values (including universalism, which includes care for the environment). We then rely on the existing literature to discuss the current situation regarding environmental attitudes in seven CE EU countries (Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Poland, and Slovenia). These countries were chosen because they share common geo-political position within the EU as well as their historical ties. In the empirical part of the paper, we focus on one item of ‘Human Values Scale’ related to human care for the environment and analyze cross-national changes in responses over the 10-year range of ESS data. We also construct materialistic and post- materialistic values indices from the remaining items and correlate them with the care for the environment, as these values have been shown to be good predictors for environmental attitudes in previous research. Furthermore, we also correlate the responses on the care for the environment with key socio-demographic characteristics. To better understand the cross-national results, we will additionally analyze ESS data from Round 8 (2016), which included the Climate Change module, and the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) Environment module (2010). This research was conducted as part of the project SECRURAL funded by Croatian National Science Foundation (UIP-2019- 04-5257).
