Sažetak
This paper presents a description of the standard debate format which the authors have adapted for classroom use to suit the needs of tertiary level students. Practice has shown that in-class debates involve effective task based activities which engage tertiary level students in oral communication and develop basic language skills. The paper demonstrates how students, while preparing for an in-class debate, gain not only linguistic, but also, life skills which they can use in their future careers. The authors describe the phases which lead up to the in-class debate, the debate process itself, as well as follow up activities that can be used by teachers.
