Sažetak
This paper presents the results of an ethnographic case study of squatting in Zagreb, based on the example of the BEK. Research was conducted as part of work package 7 of the project Cultural Heritage and Identities of Europe's Future (Horizon 2020). BEK was founded in early 2018 as a platform for various social, cultural, and artistic content with the purpose of generating an innovative socio-cultural climate in order to holistically develop the local community. We focused our research on analysing forms of organization, activities and motivations of actors within BEK. Also, we discuss the distinction between social center and squat. Through such an approach, our goal is to connect the empirical material with theoretical concepts in the field of youth sociology, urban sociology, activism and participation. Young people gathered around BEK use various elements of culture through their activities in order to manifest their dissatisfaction through cultural production. Thinking about culture as an inclusive element in society, they make a distinction and distance themselves from ethnonationalist tendencies in society. This ethnographic case study is based on eight months of fieldwork, research diaries, and interviews with 13 respondents.
