Sažetak
Apart from the many beneficial aspects of technology use, including establishing and maintaining relationships, the negative consequences of the overuse of the Internet and digital devices can also occur. In order to investigate the level of self-perceived problematic and risky Internet use among adolescents and recognize differences in accordance with gender, school grade, and area of living, a survey was conducted among 346 adolescents in Croatia. We administered a survey that included relevant demographic questions and a previously validated scale centered on problematic and risky Internet use. The Problematic and Risky Internet Use Screening Scale (PRIUSS) was developed by Jelenchick, Eickhoff, Christakis, Brown, Zhang, Benson, and Moreno (2014). For this study, the scale was translated from English into Croatian based on the back-translation method. The results from the exploratory factor analysis suggest that the psychometric structure of the scale administered in Croatia is the same as that found by authors in the American sample (Jelenchick et al., 2014). To answer research questions on the levels of problematic and risky Internet use among adolescents and test differences between respondents in the targeted population, we used both descriptive and inferential statistics (t- test and ANOVA). Our results indicate that gender and area of living (rural versus urban locations) are factors that are related to problematic Internet use. Our results suggest that preventing adolescents' problematic and risky Internet use should consider gender differences and broader social context. As technology use is multiplying, the needs of children and youth are changing. Hence, schools and parents should be prepared for the changing conditions of Internet use.
