Sažetak
The utilization of skin penetration models as tools in predicting the fate of drugs and active substances from dermatological and cosmeceutical products contributes to better development and optimization of effective skin therapies. The well-defined skin models, able to identify and evaluate the intrinsic properties of the formulation, offer faster optimization and product development. In the past, most of the optimization stage in drug development relied on the use of suitable ex vivo animal/human models and animal studies. However, increasing restrictions in use and handling of animals and human skin accelerated the search for simple, reliable, and robust artificial skin models. In this chapter, an unbiased overview of the most commonly used in vitro models, with an emphasis on their potential and limitations, is presented. The proposed overview should offer assistance in choosing the most applicable in vitro model for the particular (trans)dermal therapy. However, when selecting the optimal model, the focus should be on the interplay between the availability, ease of use, cost, and respective limitations.
