Sažetak
With the expansion of the Ottoman Empire to the Adriatic region in the 16th century, the Venetian Stato da Mar and the Ottoman eyalet of Bosnia became neighbors across a roughly 500 km long territory. After the 4th Ottoman – Venetian war (Guerra di Cipro 1570 – 1573), a series of particular interests led to the establishment of the scala di Spalato as the main nexus of Adriatic – Balkan trade in 1577 through the mediation of Daniele Rodriga and his Sephardim community. Simultaneously, a series of infrastructural and administrative developments were put in place making a system of formalized mercantile exchange that comprised dogane, lazzaretti and fondachi both in Venice and the Adriatic. For the first time a formalized system of sanitary control expanded from the lagoon to the territories of the Stato da Mar. This occurrence chronologically correlates with the first discussions about the housing of Ottoman traders, which resulted in the formation of the Fondaco dei Turchi. Having in mind that their position was inside the same system organized by the office of the Cinque Savi alla mercanzia and their functions complementary, these building types should be put in correlation. The aim of this presentation is to show how the Venetian Republic, due to socio-geographic, sanitary and economic reasons, implemented a diffuse system of gradual border crossing comprised of various levels from the frontier zone to the markets of Rialto. Different crossings were marked with different building types. The proposal will be approached through the analysis of spaces – primarily their functions – through the documents of the office of the Cinque Savi alla mercanzia. The parallel systems of organizing mercantile encounters in various Dalmatian cities and Dubrovnik will also be analyzed.
