Sažetak
The complex interfacial processes responsible for aggregation of biological particles can be decoupled using a model hydrophobic interface, mercury electrode/seawater, where interfacial tension and charge can be varied at will. We have investigated the mechanism of initial attachment of individual cells of marine macroflagellates Dunaliella tertiolecta and Isochrysis galbana. The attachment of each cell is recorded as a well defined electrical signal (current-time transient) in a charasteristic range of potentials. Each electrical signal is caused by displacement of counter ions and water molecules from the inner double layer of the electrode by the cell. The critical potential of appearance of signals serves to estimate critical interfacial tension of attachment. The attachment efficiency of living cells depends critically 0n the interfacial tension of cells and electrode. Interfacial tension of cells in exponential phase of growth is higher then in stationary phase.
