Sažetak
From discrete and dispersed, to condensed and organized, intermolecular interactions provide the links between molecular structure and bulk properties of crystalline materials. They also hold the key to effective bottom-up approaches toward design and synthesis of both single- component and multicomponent organic solids, as well as of coordination compounds with desirable structural features. The deceptively simple act of molecular recognition creates the means whereby different discrete chemical components recognize, bind, and aggregate, and such events are controlled by a delicate balance and competition between intermolecular forces that inhabit a broad range of energy scales. The primary challenge hampering reliable synthesis of materials with precise structural metrics and desired chemical composition is the shortage of transferable guidelines for preplanned crystal engineering based on noncovalent interactions.
