Sažetak
Computed tomography (CT) is becoming a more frequent advanced tool of diagnostic imaging in chelonians. CT allows us to see the multiple organic systems due to the lack of complete clinical examination because of chelonian anatomy. Unlike X-ray and ultrasound, CT is more sensitive for tissue contrast. Consequently it is superior for determining exact position of organs or soft tissue changes and the degree of a particular skeletal disease. In order to prevent movement blur, chelonian are fixed onto wooden blocks, placed in boxes or the patients legs are taped into the shell. Usually there is no need for anesthesia. The most common causes of diseases in chelonian are poor husbandry, unbalanced nutrition or trauma caused by a fall or a bite. Skeletal imaging findings include: fractures of long bones and shell, metabolic bone disease, luxation, tumors. Furthermore, protrusion of the tympanic scale and obstruction of the middle ear can be seen. In the respiratory system we can observe pneumonia, foreign body, obstructive changes, hematomas or lung field perforation. Indications for CT of gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary system are constipation, foreign body, neoplasia or enlarged liver. In the urogenital system, the CT scan is used to describe low-degree calcified allantoic stones and their layers and enlargement or calcification of the kidneys. CT in female chelonians can also be used for the assessment of number, size, form, radiodensity and contents of follicles or eggs. Computed tomography is strongly recommended as very useful, easily performed and fast diagnostic imaging technique for chelonians because of numerous benefits of “looking under their shells”.
