Sažetak
The main subject of this presentation is to show how the usage of surveillance in restrictive manner can obstruct the goal of achieving social justice. Social justice is under the auspice of the inequality concept which is crucial to this presentation. The increase of surveillance, both public and private, was meant to serve as a measure of protection for the citizens. What I mean to show is that the massive increase in surveillance allowed for surreptitious motives to take over. In large cities, such as Los Angeles, New York or London, there is practically zero unobserved space. Under the mask of security, civil freedom is being taken away and the cleavage between the rich and the poor grows even bigger. That disparity is clearly shown by the increased number of gated communities where rich people segregate and isolate themselves from “unwanted visitors” – the unwanted visitors usually being of different race or social status. Similar to the gated communities, but on a larger scale is the example of Los Angeles where the poor were, and are, being segregated from the rich using means such as denying access to public spaces (benches, parks, toilets) or even moving the poor in an gated community of their own (Skid Row) where they could be easily monitored. This is the main focus of my presentation. Use of surveillance techniques, whether technological or not, is at the expense of marginal social groups and social justice as such remains unattainable.
