Sažetak
Introduction/Objectives: The continuous progressive aging of populations accompanies a growing prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease patients. With 50 million patients worldwide, Alzheimer’s disease is the most common neurodegenerative disease. Nonpharmacological methods complement the moderate efficacy of pharmacological treatment of cognition disorders. Music therapy is suitable because of the relative preservation of musical memories. Music as an auditory language activates brain areas involved in auditory perception, cognition, and motor control in the brain, and proper rhythmic patterns facilitate memory coding of nonmusical information. This paper aims to present the relevant findings to show the importance of the application of music therapy in the neurorehabilitation of a person with Alzheimer’s disease. Participants, Materials/Methods: By using a descriptive method of work, relevant biomedical literature is searched and analyzed. Criteria of inclusion met 14 articles published in the past five years with keywords Alzheimer Disease, Rehabilitation, Music Therapy, and Systematic review. Results: Characteristic spatial and temporal disorientation, psychomotor agitation, and asociality require the use of complementary, supportive methods of non-invasive approach with stimulation of psychophysical integrity. Therefore, music therapy is a valid resource in achieving the cognitive and social goals of neurorehabilitation because of the brain’s neuroplasticity. Conducted neuroscientific and psychological studies present effects of the music such as the stimulation of motor, cognitive, and language functions and a distinct impact on vital parameters such as blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate. Music therapy stimulates mental and spatial-temporal self- awareness and relieves symptoms of anxiety and depression. It arouses the secretion of 17β- estradiol and testosterone melatonin, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. Suitable models of music therapy in patients with Alzheimer’s disease are the receptive method - Musica Medica method and the active method - Orff’s method. The Musica Medica is a method with vibroacoustic with a positive effect on sensorimotor and speech difficulties, relieves anxiety and stress. Orff’s method increases relaxation and concentration, the development of sensory perception (tactile, acoustic, optical, spatial), coordination, and smoother communication with the environment. Conclusions: Music therapy stimulates cognitive, communicative, psychosocial, emotional, and behavioral functions. Applying the above strengthens the feeling of well-being and improves the quality of life. Music therapy, an inexpensive and pleasant intervention with no adverse effects, is a promising supplement to pharmacological treatment. The emphasis is on a holistic approach in health care and treatment of patients with Alzheimer’s dementia.
