Sažetak
In this introductory chapter of the book, a theoretical approach toward the young as a marginal social group is elaborated. The young are observed as a specific age group sharing certain common characteristics and experiences, and at the same time characterized by internal social divisivness corresponding to the differentiation of the society they live in. The social circumstances in which the generation of young people in the mid 1980s and 1990s were analyzed. It was found that the social position of youth in the transitional period had become worse in a number of areas of everyday life, as in Croatia as well as in other transitional countries. The goals and hypothesis of the research were defined in the research methodology, and the instrument used, the structure of the sample of youth and the applyed data analysis methods explained. A special emphasis was placed on the comparative dymension of the research which enables the detection of changes developed in the value systems and behavioral patterns of the young, after the establishment of a democratic social and political order.
