Sažetak
Objective: To investigate in what degree the patients experience a difference induced by teeth whitening over time. Material and methods: The 50 examinees randomly assigned to an experimental (N=24) and a control group (N=26) were analysed. Frontal teeth of the experimental group were whitened with light activated gel for 30 minutes, while the same procedure was done with the control group, with inactive gel. The examinees were assessed before, a week after and a year after the procedure. The colour of the reference tooth was determined with a spectrophotometer. The Psychosocial Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire was used to measure aesthetic concern (AC), psychological impact (PI), social impact (SI) and dental self- confidence (DSC). Results: Short-term colour change was higher in active than in placebo group (p<0.001 ; r=0.543) but in the long-term the difference decreased remaining higher in active than control group (p=0.025 ; r=0.318). Exposure to the intervention, regardless of active substance or a placebo, in the short-term induced a decrease in PI, SI and AC and an increase in DSC. The difference was significant for PI and SI in active group (p≤0.004 ; η2=0.257-0.283) and PI in placebo (p<0.001 ; η2=0.385). In the active group with detectable colour recurrence relapse in psychosocial effects occurred in the long-term, while in the place group there was no detectable colour recurrence the effect continued to decrease. Conclusion: Patients are susceptible to suggestion and are not able to detect well whether there is an increase in tooth brightness. However, there is a tendency to notice a relapse of colour after whitening.
