Sažetak
The idea of founding a society emerged in the summer of 1960 when Thomas (Thom) Goldstein, a professor at the City College of New York, attended a conference in Lisbon honoring the 500th anniversary of Prince Henry the Navigator. On that occasion, he met John (Jack) Parker (Curator, James Ford Bell Library, University of Minnesota), and Vsevolod (Steve) Slessarev (Assistant Curator, James Ford Bell Library, University of Minnesota), and they began an informal conversation about what it would be like to start a society that would focus on discoveries. On Thom’s invitation, eight interested people met at a lunch in New York City on 29 December 1960, and decided to form a new organization whose focal point would be exploration. They called it the Society for the History of Discoveries (SHD). Goldstein was appointed as its first President, while Parker took responsibility for being its longtime Secretary-Treasurer. Along with Goldstein, Parker, and Slessarev, the founding members of the SHD were Charles W. Nowell (University of Illinois, Department of History), Wolfe W. Schmokel (Yale University ; subsequently the University of Vermont), Wilcomb E. Washburn (Curator, Division of Political History, Smithsonian Institution), James F. Reilly (Providence Catholic Teachers’ College), and Oswald P. Backus (University of Kansas, Department of History). Gary S. Dunbar (University of Virginia at Charlottesville, Department of Geography ; subsequently the University of California Los Angeles), although not present at the founding meeting, was added to the list of founders. By 1961, 21 members had joined the society. Since then, the SHD continued to grow into a prominent organization that has held 60 annual meetings and counts about 300 members.
