Sažetak
Aim: This study aimed to assess the levels of agreement between parents or caregivers and adolescents about young adolescents' orthodontic treatment demand. Additionally to what extent is treatment demand conditioned by family impacts, psychosocial issues and altered oral function. Materials and Methods: The sample of this cross-sectional study included 221 adolescents aged 11 to 14 years (54% female) and their parents/caregivers. A five-point Likert- type scale (0-4=not at all-very much) was used to assess orthodontic treatment demand. Adolescents self-administered the Child Perception Questionnaire, while parents/caregivers self- administered the Parenter-Caregiver Perception Questionnaire and Family Impact Scale. The Dental Health Component of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN DHC) was used to determine the malocclusion severity. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Cohen's kappa coefficient were used to assess the levels of agreement between two informants. Results: The parent-child agreement on orthodontic treatment demand was weak (ICC=0.377 ; 95% CI 0.247-0.491 ; p<0.001 and κ=0.319 ; p<0.001), with a concordance in 67.4% of cases. The most common reasons for seeking orthodontic treatment derive from the emotional (EW) and social well-being (SW) domains for both adolescents and parents. In linear regression, the adolescent's reporting of impaired EW and IOTN DHC were the only significant linear predictors of orthodontic treatment demand (R=0.391 ; p<0.001). Conclusion: Parents cannot correctly assess the demand for orthodontic treatment of their children. Impaired EW is the most significant self-reported determinant of an adolescent's demand for orthodontic treatment. Family relationships and parental perspective have a low influence.
