Sažetak
A Maritime English (M.E.) lecturer should teach the students the vocabulary and grammar required for efficient carrying out specific tasks in communication off and on shore. The theme of this paper is functional aspect of the English language used as means of interpersonal intercultural communication. The paper notes that the process of consolidation of memorizing information and definitions is associated with previously learned words which then seek association with remembered concepts and learned grammar. The aim is to test, through the method of Discourse Completion Test, how successfully students use English language on board and off shore, as well as specific commands due to the rules of IMO. The results of this research showed that more systematic approach to acquire vocabulary and more difficult language structures is needed. It can be concluded that in the written communication students without adopted terminology hardly stay in the topic of conversation and during their professional communication more concise and clear sentences should be used.
