Sažetak
Rapid development of Imperial Austrian railways in the middle of 19th century secured a Südbahn branch node near Zagreb in 1862-1865. After 1867 Hungarian State Railways network was extended from Budapest through Zagreb to the Adriatic Sea. Main Railway Station was opened in 1892. Zagreb city planners from early 20th century believed that existing railway network permanently restricts further city development and produced plans containing costly bypass tracks. Railway engineers assumed that the node was initially appropriately set and proposed lifting of railway to viaducts where needed. Selected lines were lifted in 1930s and plans for lifting Main Railway Station were made. Further parts were lifted in 1960s. Central Marshaling Yard was completed in 1978. After that only necessary maintenance works were conducted. Instead of tuneling central parts of railway node the alternative is to recompose Main Railway Station on viaducts, analogous to new Vienna or Berlin Main Railway Stations.
