Zagreb has been a peripheral City in the Habsburg Empire, but has skilfully used his old connections with Central-European area after the World War One, when it positioned itself in the new Yugoslav state as a hub for knowledge and technology transfer from former Habsburg areas into the underdeveloped Balkan Hinterladn.
