Sažetak
This paper will firstly try to examine and articulate what the idea of continental pedagogy is in its essence, since this idea is not self- explanatory at all, nor is it a mere historical "fact". Most often, determining that something is continental-european is done simply by summoning vague images of "humanism" and "enlightenment". Since that is not enough, the paper will try to find the root idea or ideas that essentially characterize european spirit. In doing that it will rely mostly on work of classical greek philosophers (mostly Plato and Aristotle) and later humanistic, particularly german neohumanistic educational tradition rooted primarily in ideas of philosophers such as I. Kant and J.G. Fichte. Their connection with educational ideas of J.F. Herbart and W. von Humboldt will be examined next. The paper will primarily try to identify the central idea(s) that are the self-evident, axiomatic, essential root of what we now call 'european' and 'continental' spirit, just as well as continental education and their fundamental difference from american and english, primarily functional and pragmatic ideas. In process of doing this, we will also try to reflect shortly on the actual and potential position of continental-european idea and practice of education within the global capitalist framework, which position has very complicated political, social and economical implications. After these foundational ideas, the paper will focus on the most important founders of croatian pedagogy in late 19th and early 20th century, namely G. Arnold, P. Vuk-Pavlović and S. Matičević, where we will try to see what's essentially continental-european about thoughts and systems of these three thinkers. In process of doing this, we will try to delineate as precisely as possible these thinkers one from another and see what particularly each of them brought to the discussion. The paper will conclude with making critical relations between what's been established as continental-european in idea, in its specific croatian version and current educational landscape in europe.
