Sažetak
Introduction: Accurate dietary assessment is essential for gathering data on dietary habits and nutritional status at the population level. It is a necessary tool in prediction of risks for chronic diseases and for overall health promotion. Methods: 37 young healthy sedentary participants, 19-28 years old entered the 3-week protocol voluntarily (N(men)=18 ; N(women)=19). Subjects were given 3 identical forms for tracking food/beverage consumption based on standard 24- hour recall questionnaire (FAO 2018), modified to fit diet habits of research area. Venous blood samples were taken after overnight fast and were analyzed. Nutrient status and energy consumption was determined and analyzed with Nutri Prog - software for nutritionists and dietitians. Results: Study population had normal weight (72.7±13.2 kg) and BMI (23.6±3.29 kg/m2). Biochemical characteristics (full blood count, plasma electrolytes, iron, transferrin, creatinine, urea, fasting lipid panels, fasting blood glucose and hs-CRP) of study population were within normal reference range. 91.89% (N=34) of participants consumes less than five recommended meals per day with no major differences between sexes (women 89.47%, N=17 ; men 88.88%, N=16). 94.74% (N=18) women consumed recommended amount of vegetables. Also, 78.95% (N=15) of women follow the guidelines on carbohydrate intake. 77.78% (N=14) men adhered to the guidelines on protein intake, while they also follow guidelines on carbohydrates (83.33%, N=15) and vegetable (66.67%, N=12) intake. Only 15.8% (N=3) women and 33.33% (N=6) men consume fish, while 21.05% (N=4) women and 33.33% (N=6) men include recommended amount of fruits in their diet. Overall, men had significantly higher protein intake (P=0.02) and lower vegetable intake (P<0.0001) of recommended values compared to women. Discussion: Main observations regarding student diet were presence of irregular/skipped meals and low fruits/fish intake, independently of sex. Conclusion: Generally, students follow the guidelines on vegetable, carbohydrate and protein intake. Main differences between sexes were found in protein and vegetable intake.
