Sažetak
School curriculum, as a document allowing teachers to plan different teaching scenarios, also opens up the possibility for different activities fostering the development of students' giftedness. This refers primarily to extracurricular activities, as well as to others, such as projects. Particularly important is the planning of activities in the field of natural sciences, as part of the STEM field of study, which makes a basis of today's and future global development. Therefore, various activities stimulated in contemporary teaching contribute to the development of natural science literacy as a key competence in a society that seeks solutions to numerous global problems. Aiming to investigate the ways to encourage the development of giftedness in the field of natural sciences, a survey was conducted among teachers employed in primary schools in the city of Split, Croatia. To this purpose, the curricula of these schools were analyzed. In addition to the results of the research showing different ways of encouraging giftedness through activities such as extracurriculars, projects and the like, other ways of encouraging giftedness in the city of Split are presented. Some of them include organizing Giftedness Centers and Centers of Excellence. The results of the research presented here can be of great importance as indicators of the current implementation of working with gifted students, but also as clear guidelines for further devising different ways to encourage the development of giftedness in the field of natural sciences.
