Sažetak
Geothermal waters form a part of Croatian natural resources, used for different purposes and with different intensity over time. Currently, this resource is exploited in less than one third of known locations. The use of geothermal waters in Croatia has been characterized by no clearly defined national strategy. Based on past experiences and the trend of increased demand and use of geothermal waters, negative impacts on this natural resource could be expected. In accordance with the globally accepted concept of sustainable development, as a contribution to the development of the national strategy of geothermal water management in Croatia the following principal goals are being suggested: exploitation of the resource such that precludes its rapid devastation i.e. over-exploitation, and avoidance of negative environmental impacts by its exploitation. To ensure the implementation of the above goals, the following major directions in rational management of geothermal waters in Croatia are being suggested: continuous obtaining of relevant data on available and used potentials, stimulation and direction of scientific research related to geothermal waters, development of a study which would include all past insights into geothermal waters, stimulation of optimal use of geothermal waters, establishment of monitoring on most exploited hydrogeothermal systems, improvement of the existing law related to the use and protection of geothermal waters and establishment of a uniform system management, monitoring and protection of geothermal waters.
