Sažetak
Identification and teaching gifted children have been one of the pedagogical themes in recent years, with particular emphasis on the importance of gifted individuals for the prosperity of society. In order to develop giftedness in its fullest sense, it is important to identify potentially gifted children as early as possible, preferably in the primary education. Although it is possible to recognize the elements of children's gifts at pre-school age, it is extremely important to teaching them as soon as possible. In addition to regular teaching, the school curriculum offers a range of opportunities for realizing various activities to encourage giftedness. In order to examine the methods of identification and teaching gifted children in primary education, an emperial research was conducted among the teachers in primary education of Split-Dalmatia and Dubrovnik- Neretva County of the Republic of Croatia. The results of the research show the frequency of the identification of gifted children in schools as well as ways of teaching them. They also show self-assessment of the teacher's own competence to teaching gifted as well as the limitation they encounter teaching gifted children, and the ways of training for the same. All of the results obtained can be of utmost importance as indicators of the current implementation of teaching gifted, but also as clear guidelines for the development of teacher training and the teaching studies programs.
