Sažetak
In the last 15 years, the development and maintenance of an institutional repository have become one of the standard tasks and responsibilities of academic libraries. A number of tools and services have been developed that can assist libraries in building repositories: non-commercial or commercial, individual or consortial, standalone or hosted, those that support solely the creation of repositories, or have other functionalities (such as CRIS systems). It is inevitable that some institutions will occasionally, due to changed circumstances and needs, decide to change their repository system. In view of this, there is a surprisingly small number of documented and described cases of transition from one repository system to another, and librarians who encounter such a task will not come across ready-made guidelines and best practices. Therefore, this presentation will showcase the experience of one higher education library with the transition of its institutional repository, over the past year, from the custom solution built using open source EPrints software, to a system that is a node within a national repository network, centrally maintained and collaboratively developed, based on the Islandora framework. Our library’s experiences will be presented to address some issues that may be relevant to other institutions that decide to change their repository system, regardless of the software or platform selected. Most importantly, the transition process should be organized in such a way as to preserve the reliability of repository, not to impair the trust of users, and to maintain the reputation of a trustworthy source of content in the wider network environment. Key challenges for the repository will be: quality control of data migration and mappings, ensuring continuity in visibility and indexing (and avoiding duplicate content), ensuring the permanence of links, retaining reliable and complete usage data. It is important to realize that the repository migration can have a temporary adverse effect on the visibility and indexing of repository, but also to take every measure to alleviate such problems. Regardless of the technical, professional and organizational challenges tied to content migration and platform change, this transition should also be used as an opportunity to bring the institutional repository back into focus, to encourage (re)defining the Open Access policy and building stronger Open Science community within the institution.
