puruṣa : Adam Octipartite : Vedic literature : Old Slavic literary tradition
Sažetak
The purpose of this paper is to point out some parallels in cosmogonic passages considering questions about the creation of a first man based on quantitative criteria. Probably the earliest trace of such a concept can be found in a Puruṣasūkta (Ṛgveda 10.90.) where the Universe was produced out body of a Primeval Man and it will be taken in consideration. Apart from that, paragraphs 1.1.1. and 1.4. in Bṛhadāraṇya and Aitareya Upaniniṣads will also be analyzed. Maybe a similar motive is present in the Latin version of Old Testament apocryphon The book of Adam and Eve (Vita Adae et Evae). It is known as the Adam Octipartite and it describes the creation of Adam from eight components. Like many of the Jewish pseudepigraphical texts it had reached Old Slavic literary tradition, often changed, through translations from Byzantium. Nearly the same picture of Adam Octipartite occurs in the two Old Testament apocryphon written in Old Russian "From which parts God created Adam" and The Story of God's Creation of Adam". With some modifications the same narrative can be traced in "The Second Book of Enoch" and "The Apocrypha about the Tiberian Sea" both of them survived only in Slavic manuscripts. After taking closer look upon these paragraphs an attempt will be made to specify their relations and influences.
