Sažetak
A total of 29 samples of breast milk collected in the Rijeka Clinical Hospital were analysed for lead and cadmium content. The mean concentrations of these toxic metals were 7.3 ą 8.3 mg Pb/L and 2.54 ą 2.06 mg Cd/L, respectively. The corresponding medians of 5.0 mg Pb/L and 1.80 mg Cd/L are within the median ranges reported for these two metals in the WHO/IAEA collaborative study. Non-parametric Mann Whitney test regarding mothers age, parity, residence and smoking habits indicated higher concentration of lead in breast milk (p< 0.01) of mothers living within the city, as a result of higher lead emission derived from heavy traffic.
