Sažetak
A total of 29 samples of breast milk collected in the Rijeka Clinical Hospital were analysed for lead and cadmium content. The mean concentrations of these toxic metals were 7.3 ą 8.3 mg Pb/L and 2.54 ą 2.06 mg Cd/L, respectively. The corresponding medians of 5.0 mg Pb/L and 1.80 mg Cd/L are within the median ranges reported for these two metals in the WHO/IAEA collaborative study. Non-parametric Mann Whitney test was used for group comparisons regarding mothers age, parity, residence and smoking habits. Mothers whose residence was within the city of Rijeka exhibit higher concentration of lead in breast milk (p< 0.01) compared with those living in smaller settlements within the region.
