Sažetak
The aim of this paper is theoretical research of adequacy of different IRT models and their fitting when taking into consideration the two main types of items: selected-response items and constructed-response items. Multiple choice items (the most common form of selected-response items) differ in almost every test parameter from the constructed-response items according to the both dominant test theories – the classical and the item response theory (IRT). We established that these differences apply further on when the efforts of fitting the adequate model is concerned. Tests based on IRT principles and applications have impact on millions of students round the world each year. Two dominant approaches in the domain of IRT are using one- parameter or using multi-parameter models for fitting the items. One-parameter model is very popular because of its parsimony, but recent researches report about its weakness especially for selected-response items. Otherwise, three- parameter model is very suitable for this type of items because of pseudo-guessing (c) parameter. If an examination is constructed mainly of selected-response format items, then some of the low-proficiency individuals may select the correct options simply by guessing. We will discuss this adequacy of different IRT models for these two item types with special focus on the three-parameter model.
