Sažetak
This diploma thesis consists of five annotated translations, accompanied by a discussion. Excerpts from three books were translated from English into Croatian (This is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor by Adam Kay, The Translation of Childrens’ Literature: A Reader by Gillian Lathey and Quantitive Research Methods in Translation and Interpreting Studies by Christopher Mellinger and Thomas Hanson), and two from Croatian into English (Narodni preporod u Istri (1860 – 1907) by Antoni Cetnarowicz and Uvjerljivo drugi by Sven Popović). The discussion focused on humor in translation of This is Going to Hurt. The aim of the discussion was to show the many ways humor can be translated. The majority of humor in this book was wordplays based on medical terminology, which proved to be problematic for translation. However, this discussion shows that if translators chose the right translation theory and the accompanying translation strategies, no joke is untranslatable. The first part of the discussion provides a theoretical framework of humor in translation, while the second part is an analysis of five instances of humor and their translations.
