Sažetak
The article focuses on one of Roth’s less prominent novels, "Hotel Savoy" (1924). The novel is set in a provincial city hotel in the wake of the First World War, where people from all parts of the Habsburg Monarchy and beyond fnd themselves crammed together for an indefnite time. Cut off from the world, the hotel and its inhabitants illustrate melancholy as a state of mind that lacks any spatial link to the external world and characterises individuals who—like Roth himself— never really found themselves at home after the fall of the Empire.
